A Declaration Measures What It Measures

Environmental product declarations are being asked for by name and asked for earlier. Knowing the boundary of your own document is what keeps a comparison honest.

An environmental product declaration reports what it measured, over the boundary it declared, for the product it covers. Environmental product declarations, health product declarations and Declare labels are being asked for by name in specifications, and asked for earlier than they used to be, so the boundary of the document has become a practical question on both sides of the opening.

The document is a real achievement and a real liability, and the liability half is the one manufacturers rarely plan for.

What changed with LEED v5?

Since the first of July, new LEED projects register under version five, and an environmental product declaration carries more weight in it than it did before. Version five is new ground for everyone in the openings trade, and the alliance is paying close attention to the requirements as they settle.

Two things are settled enough to say. A product-specific, externally verified declaration is the document the rating system is asking for. And no single specification section earns a materials credit on its own, because the thresholds are project-wide. A product counts toward a credit. It does not earn one by itself.

Which openings carry real embodied carbon?

Embodied carbon follows mass. A steel door and its hollow metal frame sit near the top of the list for an opening, and a latch sits near the bottom. Heavy assemblies, such as acoustic, radio frequency and multi-threat doors, are the ones where the number is worth asking for first. Saying that out loud is more useful than treating every component in the opening as equally weighted.

That ordering also tells a manufacturer where to start. A company that makes heavy assemblies will be asked for a declaration sooner than a company that makes trim, and the request will come from a project with a carbon commitment attached to it.

What does a declaration leave out?

A declaration covers a declared boundary, most often from raw material through the factory gate, and it measures production. Installation, the years of service, the hardware that gets replaced twice over the life of the door, and the substitution accepted in the field are outside it unless the document says otherwise. Comparing two declarations is only honest when both cover the same boundary for a comparable product, and the reader has to check that before the numbers mean anything.

Declarations also expire. A document that was current when the section was written may be past its date when the submittal arrives.

How does a manufacturer prepare?

Start by documenting what is already true. A baseline review looks at the declarations a company holds, the data behind them, and where the gaps sit, and it returns a list in priority order. Quarterly guidance keeps the claims tied to verified attributes as the rating systems move. Transparency marketing turns verified disclosures into spec-facing pages a specifier can find and quote, which matters because a declaration that exists only in a drawer answers no one.

Every sustainability statement on a product page should be grounded in a verified attribute or a disclosure. The claim that reaches a project review then has a document behind it.

Why does this sit first among the alliance's programs?

Verified documentation is the first layer of an independent, product-neutral reference for the full opening system. A comparison across products on one set of criteria starts with documents that measure the same thing over the same boundary, and the sustainability program is where that discipline is built.

Questions we get

Does a declaration earn a LEED credit?
A product counts toward a credit. Credits are awarded at the project level against project-wide thresholds, so no single section or product earns one on its own.
Which products should get a declaration first?
Heavy assemblies, because embodied carbon follows mass. Steel doors, hollow metal frames and multi-threat doors sit near the top; small hardware sits near the bottom.
Can two declarations be compared directly?
Only when they cover the same declared boundary for a comparable product, and both are current. Check the boundary and the date before comparing numbers.
